Adherence: Do Flashcards
What factors can increase adherence?
Good education
Aids (Pillboxes and timers)
Good Doctors
Social Support
How can good education improve adherence?
People would be more likely to understand the risks, susceptibility and severity (HBM)
You would also have less barriers in your way
What did Kalichman et al. (1999) find?
Individuals seeking treatment for HIV/AIDS were less likely to be adherent if they had a lower education level.
What did Goln et al. (2002) find about education?
Edication level was an accurate predictor of adherence in HIV sufferers.
What did Holc et al. (2016) find?
they found a statistically significant difference in adherence between education levels and adherence to treatment.
How can Aids improve adherence?
Part of an action plan, something that is a key component of the HAPA and must be present and completed in order to change behaviour, according to the model.
What did Goln et al. (2002) find about aids?
The use of aids was a useful predictor in predicting adherence in HIV sufferers
What did Gaston and Prapavessis (2012) find?
A mix of PMT and aids were successful in getting expecting mothers to engage in exercise.
What did O’brien (1992) find?
Doctor patient relationships can increase adherence
Doctors using understandable language can encourage exchanges and makes patients participate in their treatment. It creates a friendly and efficient environment.
What did Francis et al. (1969) find?
a participatory relationship is most successfull in promoting adherence.
what did Taylor (1986) say?
misunderstanding can lead to non-adherence.
How can social support Increase adherence?
Social support has a role in the HAPA model, in the violitional stage. this would make disengagemnt more likely. Disengagement at this stage would stop any change in behaviour and therefore make adherence to medication unlikely.
What did sherbourne (1992) find?
social support contributed to adherence in diabetics
those who felt distressed about illness were more liekly not to adhere, support could aid this.
