viral- can still do stuff. bacterial- really rough/sick

fever, purulent tonsils, attend clinic, inflamed tonsils, no cough
mx for tonsillitis
supportive, abx for high feverPAIN score- phenoxymethylpenicillin, clarithrymycin if allergic to penicillin
when to consider surgery for tonsillitis
> 10to, recurrent sore throat (>7), severley debilitating
main tonsillitis comps
Quincy (peritonsillar abscess), paraphrayngeal abscess
what is Quincy
bacteria from acute tonsillitis penetrates the muscle
s/s of Quincy
unilateral throat pain, odynopagia, trismus
signs- medial displacement of tonsil, uvea moves away from affected side
mx of Quincy
aspirate and abx
obstructive hyperplasia is what
tonsillar and adenoids tend to swell causing issues
s/s of obstructive hyperplasia
snoring, obligate mouth breathers, voice changes
when do you remove adenoids/ tonsils in kids
if they have obstructive sleep apnoea
what is a pharyngeal pouch
out-pouching of pharyngeal mucosa occurring between cricopharyngius and thyrophfaryngius muscles
s/s of pharyngeal pouch
progressive dysphagia, lump in throat, halitosis, reflux of food
