Q

What did Prochaska and Diclemente consider was the significance of decisional balance?

A

They believe that the transition between different stages could be predicted by differences in decisional balance characteristics
e.g. People in prep phase gave benefits of change greater emphasis than those in the contemplation phase

Q

Why did Prochaska et al (1992) develop “The Spiral Model”?

A

Linear progression through the stages is possible but relatively rare. A spiral is a better visual representation of how people move through the stages

Q

How do they describe the spiral model?

A

Most people can progress through the stages but most will relapse. Although often end up back in pre-contemplation many may end up back at contemplation or preparation.
It suggests people don’t go endlessly round in circles and regress back to where they started but each time they recycle through the stages they learn something and can try something different the next time(Diclemente et al, 1991)
