anorexia weight loss fatigue abdo pain vomiting skin pigmentation dizziness low BP tiredness

What are the biochemical signs of Addisons disease?
A
low Na high K high ACTH levels high renin low aldosterone

What causes Addisons disease?
A
primary adrenal insufficiency meaning not enough steroids and therefore low mineralcorticoid activity

What is the diagnostic test for Addisons disease?
A
short synACTHen test - measure plasma cortisol 30mins after 250mg ACTH injection
normal >250 post ACTH >550

What is the management of Addisons disease?
A
hydrocortisone 15-30mg - to replace cortisol
flurocortisone - to replace aldosterone
