Adaptations Flashcards
Tapeworm adaptions
Suckers and hooks Large number of eggs produced No gut Large absorption Thick outer cuticle to protect from
Flea adaptations
Sharp mouths
Flat body
Long legs for jumping
Malaria cycle
Gametocytes infect mosquito. When mosquito sucks blood with gametocytes it turns into sporozoites in salivary glands.
Sporozoites are passed onto humans when Mosquitos bite us. These sporozoites go to the liver where they turn into merozoites.
Merozoites are released from the liver into the blood. Where they enter red blood cells. Some of these then into schizonts.
Schizonts burst the red blood cells releasing more merozoites. This coincidences with the fever.
Some merozoites reproduce into female gametocytes which are passed onto the mosquito when it bites.
2 living organisms that can be used as indicators
Lichens, pollution especially sulphur dioxide.
Invertebrate animals, water pollution, concentratin of oxygen in water.
3types of adaptations
Structural
Behavioural
Functional
Adaptation definition
Special features that makes an organism particularly well suited to the environment where it lives
Extremophiles
Organisms which live in environments that are very extreme. Eg temp, pressure
Factors that may influence the distribution of organisms
Temp Availability of nutrients Light Water Oxygen Carbon dioxide Habitat
Measuring distribution of organisms
Random quantitative sampling using a quadrat along a transect
Air pollution living indicator
Lichen, more equal less polluted
Indicator species for water pollution and dissolved O2 levels
Invertebrate animals. Did types and numbers
