Adanced Nursing of the Heat Stroke Patient Flashcards
How is body heat produced?
by muscular activity
Where does thermoregulation occur?
the anterior hypothalamus
What do thermoreceptors do?
indicate when temperature is above or below a set point
What do thermoreceptors do if heat is above the set point?
heat dissipates
What do thermoreceptors do when heat is below the set point?
heat conservation and production
What is hyperthermia?
increased body temperature of above 39.2 degrees
What causes hyperthermia?
- pyrexia
- increased heat production due to increased muscular activity
- heat stroke
What is classic heat stroke?
reduced heat loss
What is exertional heat loss?
overheating due to over exercising at inappropriate temperatures
What causes heat stroke?
Failure to dissipate heat
What else can cause heat stroke?
- BOAS
- increased environment temperature/humidity
- poor environmental ventilation
- circulatory compromise
- obesity
- breed disposition
What are the clinical signs of heat stroke?
- Stress
- hyperthermia
- tachycardia
- hypovolaemia
- hyperdynamic pulses
- peripheral vasodilation
- collapse
- hyperaemic mucus membranes with rapid CRT
What does hyperaemia mucous membranes mean?
bright red mucous membranes
