Sudden decrease in kidney function, resulting in the inability to maintain balance of:
fluid
electrolytes
acid/base balance
excrete nitrogenous waste

How do we define AKI?
A
Creatinine (Cr) is the preferred lab measurement
• AKI =
• Increase in serum Cr within hours to days
- Cr increase of at least 0.3 mg/dL
- or a reduction in urine output • over 24 hours

What is Azotemia?
A
- Azotemia
- Buildup of nitrogenous waste products in the blood (BUN)
- Indicator of kidney dysfunction
