Action Research Flashcards
The steps in “Action Research:”
- Identify the problem
- Collect Data
- Analyze and Interpret Data
- Take Action
- Reflection
“ICAT”
“Identify the problem” in action research:
Determine what areas of interest require investigation, for example, curriculum, student outcomes, instruction or technology related. Develop questions that will lead to a hypothesis and the research effort. Develop a research methodology.
“Collect data” in action research:
Collect raw data that will help in answering the research questions. Some tools that can be utilized are standardized tests, surveys, questionnaires and interviews.
“Analyze and Interpret Data” in action research:
This involves organizing the data into terms that can be understood so decisions can be made about the results.
“Take Action” in action research means:
The final step is to make a decision by taking action on your research problem. Example: this could be implementation, modification or discontinuance of a school curriculum or program.
Action research is based:
on solving specific problems that local practitioners face in their schools and communities. Action research is based on the idea that having a “researcher attitude” is helpful in dealing with your complex and changing environments.
“Reflective Practice” is:
Assess the effects intervention to determine if improvement has occurred or if the problem was resolved.
_____________know what you want to investigate, develop questions about the area and establish a research methodology .
Identify the problem
_____________gather information about your research question.
“Collect data” administer teacher-made, standardized tests, surveys and interviews.
_____________interpret collected data to answer the research question.
“Analyze and Interpret Data”
___________this is the stage to make a final decision on the results; continue, modify or discontinue program or curriculum.
” Take Action”
The are four elements or themes to action research:
- Empowerment of participants
- Collaboration through participation
- Acquisition of knowledge
- Social change
Action research is based on the following guidelines:
- Educators become more effective by working on problems they identify and have control over
- Educators support one another through collaboration
- Educators worked together and increase their professional development
The typical action research case involves:
An educator investigating an issue in the classroom or a team of educators working on an issue outside the classroom.
In action research, an educator maybe seeking solutions to problems of:
- Classroom management
- Instructional strategies
- Use of materials
- Student learning
