Barnadine pops up from the middle of the stage, Friar appears to have fainted at the sight of ragozines head
who is being used instead of Barnadine
Ragozine
Isabella feels remorce after Claudio’s supposed death
“unhappy Claudio! wretched Isabelle”
how does the scene go
Initialy plan on executing Barnadine to use his head but he claims he is too drunk he is not in a fit state and cannot repent so Provost suggests Ragozine a pirate already executed who looks similar to Claudio. Isabella arrives and the duke tells her that Claudio has been executed. Lucio enters comforting isabella but speaking how the duke would be back tommorrow and wouldnt have happened with him there continues to make jokes about him being with woman ( continuing after Isabella leaves to give friar peter a letter) uknowingly to him the duke is there.
the Duke chooses not to tell Isabella
“But I will keep her ignorant of her good/ To make her heavenly comforts of despair/ When it is least expected” feels immoral so that he can save her once she is really low
People are coerced
Isabella into not trusting Angelo but trusting the church to following the duke, Pompey becuase of the prestige and laws backed being an executioner to being a killer, mariana’s love for Angelo to having sex out of wedlock, Provost undermining the laws through his internal sense of justice and backed by a friar. However Barnadine does not comply living in the prison of his own making having a chance to escape previously but chosing not to
Lucio if the Duke was home Claudio would have lived
“if the old fantastical Duke of dark corners had been at home, he had lived”
