1979 BBC production
TV production Angelo is sat in a throne speaking giving him an air of superiority accompanied by Escalous & him being dressed in fine clothes compared to Elbow, Froth & pompey. Creates a sense of divide & discmofort.
what does Escalous suggest to Angelo instead of his extreme measures
Compares the law to pruning they must “cut a little” rather than “fall and bruise to death”
What foreshaddowing and hypocracy is in one of Angelo’s quotes
“tis one thing to be tempted Escalous another thing to fall”
what does Elbow come to do
He comes with Froth and Pompey as he found them in a brothel. Froth confesses to working to M.overdone. Escalous tells him how prostitution is illegal and to not go to a brothel again.
Angelo in this scene
first scene we see him as a leader
Escalous quote sin & virtue
“Some rise by sin, and some by virtue fall.” Could be speaking about Claudio falling by his sin of sex out of marriage and yet his true dedication to his marriage and Angelo falling by his strict virtue making him unmerciful and a muderer
What is Elbows role
Constable, who gets words mixed up my “wife who i detest…” ( no need to memorise)
Why does Angelo use Claudio as an example
Escalous quote “had a most noble father” so as Angelo istrying to re-establish state power so Claudio is a good example as he is virtuos and comes from a good family so the law can come down on anyone- Escalous misses this idea.
