Acids and Redox Flashcards
What does an acid do when dissolved in water?
Releases hydrogen ions as protons into the solution
What is the difference between a strong acid and a weak acid?
A strong acid completely dissociates in water
A weak acid partially dissociates in water
What kind of acids are most organic acids?
Weak acids
What does a base do to an acid?
Neutralises it to form a salt
What is an alkali?
A base that dissolves in water releasing hydroxide ions into the solution
What happens in neutralisation?
A h+ ion reacts with an OH- ion to make water
What is released when acid reacts with a metal carbonate?
Salt
Water
Carbon dioxide
What is a titration?
A technique used to accurately measure the volume of one solution that reacts exactly with another solution
What three things can titration a be used for?
Finding the concentration of a solution
Identification of unknown chemicals
Finding the purity of a substance
What is used to make up a standard solution?
A volumetric flask
When do you stop a titration?
When you reach concordance
What is important when working out the mean titre?
Use only your closest accurate titres
What is an oxidation number?
The number of electrons used in bonding to a different element
What is the oxidation number for elements?
0
What is the oxidation number for oxygen?
-2
