Acids and Bases Flashcards
What is H+
A hydrogen atom stripped of it’s electron
In pure water, the number of __________ equals the number of __________
Hydrogen ions, Hydroxide ions
What is an acid?
Molecule which releases hydrogen ion sot a solution and exceeds the OH- concentration
What is a base?
Molecules which add more hydroxide to the concentration than H+
How is the pH scale measured?
Ten-fold change in H+ concentration. The smaller the number, the more acidic.
pH of 4 is how many times more acidic than a pH of 5?
Ten times
pH of 4 is how many times more acidic than a pH of 6?
One hundred times
What is a buffer
A weak acid/base pair that resists chang ein pH
What is hydrochloridic acid? Strong or weak acid/base? Why?
A strong acid because it releases all of it’s H+ when dissolved in water.
What is an alkaline?
Having a pH greater than 7 (basic)
