Acids Flashcards
What is a strong acid?
An acid that releases all of its hydrogen ions into the solution and completely dissociates
What is a weak acid?
An acid that releases a small number of its hydrogen ions into the solution and partially dissociates
What is a base?
A compound that neutralises an acid, by accepting a hydrogen ion to form a salt
What is an alkali?
A type of base that dissolves in water forming hydroxide ions
What is a salt?
The product of a reaction in which the H+ ions from the acid are replaced by the metal or ammonium ion
What is the reaction between a metal and an acid?
Metal + acid —–> salt + hydrogen
What is the reaction between a metal oxide and an acid?
Metal oxide + acid —–> salt + water
What is the reaction between a metal hydroxide and an acid?
Metal hydroxide + acid —–> salt + water
What is the reaction between a metal carbonate and an acid?
Metal carbonate + acid —–> salt + water + carbon dioxide
What is the reaction between ammonia and an acid?
Ammonia + acid —–> ammonium salt
What is uncertainty?
Half the smallest possible unit you can make
What is the uncertainty of a 100cm3 measuring cylinder (markings every 1cm3)?
0.5
What is the equation for percentage uncertainty?
Uncertainty of equipment
————————————- X100
size of measurement
What do you have to do to the uncertainty measurment when you do more than one reading?
Multiply it by the number of readings
What should you do if the acid is di/tribasic?
Double/triple the moles of the base
