Acid base disorders part 1 Flashcards
Carbonic acid can go into bicarbonate and hydrogen ions or it can convert to
carbon dioxide and water
Carbonic acid-bicarbonate buffer system
Buffer system is used to regulate pH
bicarbonate is basic substance
CO2 is the acidic substance
Which organ system regulates bicarbonate?
kidneys
Which organ system regulates CO2?
the lungs
Kidneys and lungs are working very closely to regulate the amount of bicarbonate and the amount of CO2 so by changing the ratio of bicarbonate and CO2 your changing the pH of the blood
If pH goes lower you could go into
acidotic state
If the pH increases you can go into alkalotic state
You can measure amount of CO2 by measuring what?
the partial pressure
PaCO2; a represents the arterial so you can measure the amount of CO2 in the arterial blood
_________,a measure of carbon dioxide gas, direct proportional to the amount of carbonic acid
PaCO2
In ____________patient is retaining more CO2 in the lungs cause the arterial pressure of the CO2 in the blood to increase
hypoventilation
In _______ patient your breathing out more of the CO2 so causing the partial pressure to go down
hyperventilation
The normal value of PaC02 is what?
35-45
If you measure patients PaCO2 and its 80 is this hypoventilation or hyperventilating?
Hypoventilation and patient will go into acidosis
If pCO2 number increase what will happen to pH?
pH will decrease
Low pH is acidotic state
If PaCO2 is 15 is patient hypoventilation or hyperventilating
Hyperventilating because they are breathing out more of the CO2 and pt will go into alkalosis because you have less of the CO2 which is an acidic susbtance
