Threatened
Unexplained bleeding and cramping, the cervix is closed and membranes are intact.
Abortion
Termination of a pregnancy before the fetus reaches the age of viability (age it can survive outside the uterus 24 weeks)
Inevitable
Increased bleeding and cramping. The cervix begins to dilate and membranes may rupture.
Incomplete
Some of the products of conception are expelled. Most often the placenta is not expelled. Bleeding is heavy and cramping severe.
Complete
All products of conception are expelled.
Missed
Embryo or fetus dies but is retained. Cervix is closed, if fetus is not expelled within 6 weeks DIC can occur.
Habitual (recurrent spontaneous)
Any natural spontaneous abortion occurring in three consecutive pregnancies. Most common cervix begins to dilate in second trimester.

Cervical cerclage
