Abdominal Muscles Flashcards
What are the two main groups of muscles in the abdominal wall?
Flat muscles
Vertical muscles
Name the flat muscles
External oblique
Internal oblique
Transversus abdominis
In which direction do the fibres of the external oblique run?
Inferomedially
Origin and attachments of the external obliques?
Origins: ribs 5-12
Attachments: linea alba, pubic tubercle, anterior half of iliac crest
Innervation of the external oblique?
Thoracoabdominal nerve (T7-11)
Subcostal
Action of the external oblique?
Compresses and supports viscera
Flexes and rotates trunk
In which direction do the fibres of the internal oblique run?
Superiormedially
Innervation of the internal oblique?
Thoracoabdominal nerves (T6-T12)
First lumbar nerves
Action of the internal obliques?
Same as external
Compress and support viscera
Flex and rotate trunk
In which direction do the fibres of transversus abdominis run?
Transversely
Innervation of the transversus abdominis?
Same as internal oblique
Thoracoabdominal nerves T6-T12
First lumbar nerves
Name the vertical muscles
Rectus abdominis
Pyramidalis
Attachments of the rectus abdominis?
Origin: pubic symphysis and pubic crest
Attachments: xiphoid process and costal cartilages 5-7
Innervation of the rectus abdominis?
Thoracoabdominal nerves (anterior rami of T6-T12)
Action of the rectus abdominis?
Flexes trunk
Compresses abdominal viscera
Stabilised and controls tilt of pelvis
