Abdominal Cavity Anatomy(Snell's Clinical Anatomy By Regions) Flashcards
What are the features of the peritoneum?
1)thin and large
2)serous membrane and sac
3)lines the walls of the abdominal and pelvic cavities
4)clothes the viscera=it supports the viscera and acts as a conduit for their blood
vessels,nerves and lymph vessels
5)the peritoneum is regarded as a balloon against which organs are pressed from
outside
Discuss the general arrangement of the peritoneum?
The peritoneum consists of two layers which are continuous with each other:
(1)Parietal peritoneum:
-the outer layer and thicker than the visceral one
-lines the walls of the abdominopelvic cavity
(2)Visceral peritoneum:
-the inner layer and thinner than the parietal one
-covers to a different degree the abdominal viscera
(3)Paritoneal cavity:
-Df:the potential space between the parietal and visceral layers of the peritoneum
which in effect the inside of the balloon
-Size:the peritoneal cavity is the largest cavity in the body
-content:peritoneal fluid
-Subdivisions:1)greater sac
2)lesser sac
3)epiploic foramen
Discuss the parietal peritoneum
- the outer layer and thicker than the visceral one
- lines the walls of the abdominopelvic cavity
Discuss the visceral peritoneum
- the inner layer and thinner than the parietal one
- covers to a different degree the abdominal viscera
Define the peritoneal cavity
The potential space between the parietal and the visceral layers of the peritoneum and in effect the inside of the balloon.
What is the size of the peritoneal cavity?
The peritoneal cavity is the largest cavity in the body
What is the content of the peritoneal cavity?
Peritoneal fluid
Define the peritoneal fluid?
The peritoneum secretes small amount of serous fluid, the peritoneal fluid.
What is the amount of the peritoneal fluid?
About 50 ml
What is the function of the peritoneal fluid?
(1)Lubricates the surfaces of the peritoneum
(2)Allows free movement between the viscera=It is secreted by the peritoneum
and ensures that the mobile viscera
glide easily on one another.
(3)The peritoneal folds play an important part in suspending the various organs within
the peritoneal cavity and serve as avenues for conveying the blood vessels,lymph-
tics and nerves to these organs.
(4)Large amounts of fats are stored in the peritoneal ligaments and mesentries and
especially large amounts can be found in the greater omentum.
