A1: Halogens Flashcards
Halogens trend in reactivity
As you go down the table, reactivity decreases because shielding and atomic radium decrease, so nuclear attraction decreases, and it is less able to attract an electron for another species

Define disproportionation
A redox reaction in which the same element is both oxidised and reduced
Benefits of treating water with chlorine
Kills bacteria, making water safe to drink
Risks of treating water with chlorine
Can cause formation of chlorinated hydrocarbons which are carcinogenic
Cl2(aq)+H2O(l)
HClO(aq) + HCl(aq)
Cl2(aq) + 2NaOH(aq) , where the NaOH is cold and dilute
NaClO(aq) + NaCl(aq) + H2O(l)
