A Tour Of The Cell 2 Flashcards
Mitochondria function
Sites of cellular respiration
Uses oxygen to generate atp by extracting energy from sugars, fats, and other fuels
The infoldings in the mitochondria
Cristae
Organelles with their own dna inside of them
Mitochondria and chloroplasts
No one else
Dynamic organelle
Mitochondria - fusing and breaking constantly. As well as chloroplast
Enzymes in mitochondria - function
Respiration
Breaking down glucose into different products
Atp production
Chloroplasts
Found in plants and algae
Contain green pigment chlorophyll - main ingredients for doing photosynthesis
Photpsynthesis is the production of sugars from co2 and water using sunlight
Chloroplast structure
3-6 micrometer
Smooth Outer and inner membrane plus intermembrane space
Matrix like structure
Stroma - semi fluid material
Thylakoids inside stroma
Stacks of thylakoids form granum - plural grana
Stroma has DNA and ribosome as well plus Enzymes for photosynthesis
Thylakoid space
Tiny sace between thylakoids
Plastids family
Chlorplast - most important bc green for photosynthesis
Amyloplasts (potatoes have amyloplasts) - fat storing plastids and colorless
Chromoplasts store pigments for fruits and flowers
Peroxisomes
Oxidative organelles - oxidation of different molecules
Enzyme that removes hydrogen atoms from various substances and transfers them to oxygen
Forms hydrogen peroxide and then converts it to water
Peroxisomes functions
Break down fatty acids
Fuel for respiration
Detoxify alcohol in liver + other harmful compounds
Glyoxysomes
Breaks down fatty acids into sugar so that the emerging seed can get nutrients from sugar
Present in seeds
The number of mitochondria is correlated with
Aerobic metabolic activity
They may have one very long mitochondria or hundreds to thousands of individual mitochondria
