Q

What did he realise about microorganisms and include in his “Germ Theory” Book?

A

They were present in the air, especially dirty city air. He also learned that they can be killed by heating which he called “pasteurisation” which was the process of killing germs with heat.

Q

What did Robert Koch’s work further help?

A

Helped him to link certain germs to certain diseases. This enabled scientists to go on and isolate other germs.

Q

What did Simpson develop?

A

Discovered Chloroform for anaesthetic which was effective and improved surgeries as more accuracy was enabled. (Doses were hard to control sometimes people were unconscious too long=infection)

Q

What did Lister Develop?

A

Antiseptic surgery, using carbolic acid spray to reduce infection. Mortality rates dropped from 46% to 15% in 3 years.
It did slow down operations so some people didn’t accept this method.

17
Q

What was the significance of Lister?

A

Listers work inspired Neuber to discover aseptic surgery where ALL germs were removed. And the development of a sterilisation machine was inspired by him.

18
Q

Who discovered anaesthetics and who developed them?

A

Sir Humphrey Davy discovered in but Simpson discovered chloroform (used by Queen made it popular)

19
Q

What were magic bullets (Ehrlich)

A

‘magic bullets’ compounds that would have a specific attraction to disease and that would target and kill microorganisms
Salvarsan 606 is an example of this for Syphilis
