How did Pasteur prove his theory of germs?
By using a swan neck flask he revealed that decay was a lot faster when it had been smashed and was exposed to air
What famous vaccine did Pasteur develop?
The Rabies Vaccine
What did he realise about microorganisms and include in his “Germ Theory” Book?
They were present in the air, especially dirty city air. He also learned that they can be killed by heating which he called “pasteurisation” which was the process of killing germs with heat.
What did Pasteur conclude spread disease?
The microorganisms.
What did Koch do?
Invented a way to stain bacteria so it was easier to see them under the microscope.
What did Robert Koch’s work further help?
Helped him to link certain germs to certain diseases. This enabled scientists to go on and isolate other germs.
Who was Ehrlich?
Ehrlich discovered Salvarsan 606 which killed the bacteria causing Syphilis and ONLY the ones causing syphilis
What was the 1875 Public Health Act also called?
The Great Clean-Up
What did the 1875 Public Health Act require?
Clean water supply and a new drainage and sewage system.
What did the 1848 Act say?
They ENCOURAGE towns to collect tax for public health and they SUGGESTED an officer of medical health.
What was the importance of John Snow?
He published a book arguing that dirty water caused the cholera epidemic, he removed the handle from the pump in Broad St to stop people having dirty water.
Challenged belief in miasma.
Who opposed the Health Acts?
“Dirty Party” who were rich MP’s who didn’t want to pay such high taxes.
Why was the right for working men to vote significant?
As it meant the suffering working class could oppose the rich who didn’t care about the health of the people
How was Florence Nightingale significant?
Able to show that clean wards ad beds meant the patients got better faster.
What did Simpson develop?
Discovered Chloroform for anaesthetic which was effective and improved surgeries as more accuracy was enabled. (Doses were hard to control sometimes people were unconscious too long=infection)
