A&P 3 lab slides Flashcards
Diffusion
the movement of particles from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration
Osmosis
the diffusion of water through a semipermeable membrane when the solute can’t cross the membrane. Water moves from area of higher water concentration (lower solute concentration) to area of lower water concentration (higher solute concentration)
Filtration
is a process in which solid particles in a suspension are separated from the liquid by a filtration membrane
Dialysis membrane
membrane with tiny pores so that only small molecules can cross the tubing
Osmometer
a device used to measure osmosis
Solution vs Suspension
A solution contains a dissolved molecule while a suspension has solute molecules that don’t dissolve and are suspended in the solvent
Solute
substance being dissolved
Solvent
Dissolves substances
Saline (0.9% NaCl)
Is this isotonic, hypotonic or hypertonic?
Isotonic
Isotonic
Two solutions that have the same concentration of solutes are said to be isotonic (equal tension)
Hypertonic
A solution that has a higher concentration of solutes than another solution
Hypotonic
a solution that has a lower concentration of solutes than another solution
Extracellular fluid (ECF)
is the fluid environment outside the enclosure of the cell membrane
Intracellular fluid (ICF)
is the fluid interior of the cell
Plasma
is the fluid that surrounds blood cells
