A 3.2-Thesis Flashcards
What is the definition of a thesis?
The thesis asserts a point of view or stance, which should be supported by claims and evidence.
What is the purpose of a thesis?
A thesis is an essential part of argumentation because it allows a person to contemplate, formulate, and articulate their stance on a debatable issue, one that does not have consensus. The ability to formulate effective thesis in addition to the ability to support them effectively, further contributes to a well-functioning democracy, for it allows other to understand that person’s overall position on the issue in order to engage in a civilized and reasonable debate with them. A THESIS WITHOUT CONTEXT (SUMMARY) OR SUPPORTING CLAIMS AND EVIDENCE IS ONLY AN EMPTY SHELL.
What are the aspects of an effective thesis?
Discernible (a thesis should be recognizable and discernible within the text)-Clear (a thesis should provide a clear, concise, and impactful overall position)-Arguable( a thesis should not be a fact. It must represent a position that can be debated and that has sides)-Qualified (a thesis may include a qualifier that limits the scope of the overall position).
