Akathisia
Motor restlessness characterized by muscular quivering and the inability to sit still, often a result of chronic ingestion of neuroleptic drugs.
Aphasia
Partial or total loss of the ability to articulate ideas or comprehend spoken or written language, resulting from brain damage due to injury or disease
Apraxia
A disorder of voluntary movement consisting of the partial or complete inability to execute purposeful movements without the impairment of muscular power and coordination
Athetosis
A constant succession of slow, writhing, involuntary movements of flexion, extension, pronation, and supination of fingers and hands, and sometimes of toes and feet
Anomia
Aphasia that is characterized by the impaired ability to recall the names of persons and things (also called nominal aphasia)
Ataxia
Loss of the ability to coordinate muscular movement
Alogia
The inability to speak because of mental deficiency, mental confusion, or aphasia (i.e., poverty of thought and speech)
Alexia
Loss of the ability to comprehend the meaning of written or printed words and sentences, usually caused by brain lesions

-absence of psychosis
-often increase in creativity, efficiency
Mixed Episode
-At least one week
-rapid altering sx of manic and depressive episodes
-either poor functioning or psychosis
Postpartum Depression
-10-20% of women experience sx severe enough to warrant MDD after birth
-1/500 to 1/1000 develop depressive psychosis that may involve delusions re the newborn
Gender and Depression
-rates equal in children
-rate twice as high for women in adolescence and adulthood
