A+ 1001: RAM Flashcards
Different Kinds of RAM
- SDRAM
2. DDR SDRAM
SDRAM
Synchronized Dynamic Random Access Memory
Synchronized to the system crystal
Runs at the speed of the motherboard
has two notches
DDR SDRAM
Double Data Rate Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory
Provides two bits of information for every one tick of the clock, which sped up RAM
DDR Ram Speed Rating
DDR
Double the pc ClockSpeed
Multiply by 8 to get the PC speed.
100Mhz - DDR-200 PC-1600
DDR2
For DDR2 you double the DDR speed
DDR3
Multiply Core Clock Speed by 4 to get DDR I/O Speed
the Double the I/O Speed to get DDR3 Speed
Then Multiply by 8 to get PC3 Speed
DDR4
The DDR4 speed is the same as the Bandwidth’s MT/s (Mega transfers per second)
DDR2
Next generation of DDR RAM, Doubles in Speed from DDR
240 pin
DDR3
Next generation of DDR RAM, Doubles in Speed from DDR2
240 pin
DDR4
Next generation of DDR RAM, Doubles in Speed from DDR3
288 pin
What units are used to measure RAM speed?
DDR Speed or PC Speed
Double Sided RAM
RAM Chips on both sides of stick
Some motherboards have problems with double-sided ram sticks
Duel Channel Memory
Requires two ram sticks of the exact same size, capacity and speed
Most of the time it won’t boot with one stick
Parity/ ECC RAM
ECC Error Correction Code RAM chips has an unequal or odd amount of chips
It has an extra chip called the parity chip
Can have 2 of the ohter 8 chips be bad and still function
Only fits on motherboards that are designed ot use it
It is expensive
Mostly used in servers
SO-DIMM
They are shorter
commonly used in Laptops
SPD Chip
Serial Presence Detection Chip
Built into every ram stick
Allows the system to query ram chip to discover make, model, capacity etc.
Installing RAM
- Consult Motherboard Manual for max capacity, Speed, and channels
- Ensure notches line up
- Drop in and push
- Close latches
- Bootup system to check if system recognizes ram
DDR4 RAM modules have how many pins?
288 Pins
