USB Controller

A

Built into the motherboard

the motherboard will have various usb controllers for the different generations of usb, which are then connected to the Root Hub, which in turn exposes the usb ports

The USB controller sends commands downstream to USB device

A connector: downstream connector (plugged into the motherboard)

B connector: Upstream connector (plugged into the device)

B type connectors are designed to be upstream connectors and so will never be plugged into the computer

C type connectors does away with the upstream donwstream distinction

How to extend the amount of usb ports on a system?

A

plug a usb hub into a usb port

on windows go to device manager and open the usb controller

The downside is that Because the USB connector provides power, if you plug in too many devices into the hub, then it may not have enough power for all the devices
