What does the kidney produce?
Urine
What is the kidney’s function?
To filter blood of any unneeded substances, such as urea
What large particles are trapped for disposal?
Proteins and red blood cells
What happens to useful particles like glucose?
They get reabsorbed into the body
What happens to substances that are not reabsorbed?
They become urine, and enter the bladder
What are 2 key kidney functions?
- Regulation of water, electrolyte balance, pH
- Removal of waste from blood and excretion of urine
Blood is carried to the kidney by (1) and taken away from the kidney by (2)
- renal artery
- renal vein
Where does filtration take place?
In the nephrons, at the glomerulus
Where does filtered blood enter?
Bowman’s capsule
What small, necessary substances are reabsorbed into the blood stream?
glucose & sodium
What do the remaining waste products exit the kidney as?
urine
What is the name of the part that filters blood?
Corpuscle
What is the Glomerulus made up of?
A network of blood vessels containing unfiltered blood
Where does the filtered blood enter?
Bowman’s capsule
What does the ureter do?
carries urine
