Conversion disorder
+ person experiences physical and sensory problems with no underlying physcial cause/pathology
+ EXAMPLES: blindness, paralysis, numbness, deafness, seizures
Depersonalization
+ persistent feeling of observing oneself from outside one’s own body
+ having the sense that one’s surroundings aren’t real
Factitious disorder
+ Intentionally faking symptoms in order to assume the sick roll + those with factitious disorder tend to have some medical knowledge
+ The mother of GYPSY ROSE
Malingering
+ Intentionally faking or doctor rating symptoms for an obvious benefit, such as money, housing, avoiding work, criminal prosecution
+ a behavior, not a psychiatric disorder
+ pretending to be hit by a car
Assessing somatic symptom disorder
+ Ensure thorough physical exam with appropriate medical tests
+ assess risks for safety as a result of symptoms
+ assess childhood trauma and risk for suicide
+ assess patient support net work
+ assess for nature, location, onset, characteristics, duration of symptoms
Functional neurological disorder - aka conversion disorder
+1 or more symptoms suggesting presence of neurological disorder that cannot be explained medically
+ stress and conflicts may be associated with onset
+ calmly indifferent to symptoms that may be present - sudden blindness or paralysis
