What is malingering?
+ Intentionally faking or exaggerating symptoms for obvious benefit, such as money, housing, avoiding work or criminal prosecution + NOT psychiatric disorder!!!!

+ intentionally faking symptoms in order to appear sick - formerly Munchhausen’s syndrome

+ Factitious ordered them to someone else is “by proxy” – Munchhausen by proxy
Somatic Symptom Disorder - characteristics
+ Physical symptoms with no physical explanation
+ abnormal thoughts/feelings and behaviors associated with symptoms
+ extreme distress/dysfunction
+ symptoms not controlled or caused
+ No genetic component + link to trauma & ACEs
Interventions for somatic symptom disorders
+ assess reported signs and symptoms of issue given by client
+ assess patient’s ability to perform ADLs
+ assessed patient risk for safety from symptoms
+ Pts usually difficult: problem is REAL to
Pt
+ set SMALL goals for Pt
+ determine if symptoms are under patient’s control
+ explore patient ability to communicate feelings
+ assess childhood trauma and risk for suicide
+ DO ONLY MINIMAL CARE - do not enable - encourage them to do ADLs (somatic blindness)
Conversion disorder – signs and symptoms
+ Chronic or brief symptoms of altered voluntary motor or sensory function, caused by substantial distress or trauma
+ Example: patient goes blind without any medical explanation after witnessing in attack
+ Example: false, believe one is pregnant, body mimic signs of pregnancy
