9J-Electromagntism Flashcards
What is the neutral particle in an atom called?
neutron
What is the basic structure of an atom?
Positive nucleus and orbiting negative electrons
What is static electricity?
The build-up of electrical charge on the surface of a material, which remains stationary
How do materials produce static charge?
When two materials rub against each other, electrons transfer, due to friction, to form static charges on the surfaces of the materials
What happens when materials with opposite charges are brought close together? (Like a magnet)
They will attract to one another
What happens when materials with like charges are brought close together? (Like a magnet)
They will repel from one another
What is an electrical current?
The flow of electrons in an electrical conductor
What is current measured in?
Amps (A)
Which piece of equipment is used to measure current?
Ammeter, in series to the component
What is a force field?
The space where non-contact forces have an effect
What is an electric field?
The space around a charged object where it can attract or repel another charge
What is a magnetic field?
The space around a magnet where it can attract magnetic materials
Which three types of metal are magnetic?
Iron, cobalt, nickel
What are the two poles that magnetic fields have?
North and south poles
In which direction does force act between two opposite poles?
Force acts from the North pole towards the south pole
