9I-Forces And Materials Flashcards
What two things affect the density of an object .
Mass,volume
What is the equation for density of an object?
Density (kg/m3)=mass (kg) ÷volume (m3)
How could you tell which object is more dense by looking at a particle diagram?
Particles in the denser objects will be close together.
What is the order of the three states of matter from least dense to most dense?
gas, liquid and solid (the order)
What is the name of the force that acts upwards on an object in a fluid?
Upthrust or buoyancy
How can you tell if an object will float in terms of forces?
If upthrust is less than the weight of the object, the object was sink, otherwise it will float.
How can you predict if an object will float in a fluid in terms of density?
The object is more dense than the fluid it will sink , otherwise it will float.
What two things affect the pressure on a surface?
The force and area.
What is the equation for pressure?
Pressure (N/m2)= Force (N) ÷Area (m2)
How could you increase the pressure caused by a force?
Reduce the area the force acts over.
What is air pressure caused by?
The weight of the air above you pushing down on you.
What happens to an object when you apply to push force to it?
It compresses.
What happens to an elastic object if you remove any external forces?
It returns to its original shape.
What is the definition of the extension of a spring?
The Change in length of the spring when a force is applied.
What happens if we triple the force on a spring that obeys Hook’s law?
The extension (change in length) will triple.
