Why colonies achieved independence
- japanese humiliated western states by overrunning their colonial empires
- colonial soldiers who fought for the allies were aware that the allies wanted self determination

- they used it to convince britain to promise their independence

- the French allowed full independence of morocco and tunisia, but NOT Algeria because it had French settlers
- so the FLN used guerilla war
- they eventually got their independence

- south African whites up in laws that separated whites and blacks (apartheid)
- blacks then demonstrated against this and it led the whites using violence
- after nelson mandela was arrested, blacks then started to use violence

- many states became independent
- they all wanted arab unity, but their different points of views caused trouble
Question of Palestine
-jews wanted Palestine to be an independent state
- palestine was divided into a jewish state and arab state, after the jews got western support from the holocaust
- jews in Palestine then proclaimed the state of Israel
- the arabs got mad because westerns didn’t support the muslims in Palestine
- arabs then invaded the jewish state and failed
- there is now a bitterness between them

- but it it put it at odds with US who was trying to mobilize all nations against internal communism

- indonesia’s president was suspicious the west
- he sought economic aid from china and the soviet union and relied for domestic support on indonesian communist party
