9.2 Flashcards
Anaerobic respiration
Inorganic molecules (not O2) used as final electron acceptor
-free energy released and ATP produces is less than with O2
Fermentation
-glycolysis is only source of ATP
-Use of organic molecules as final electron acceptor
-reduces organic molecules in order to regenerate NAD+
Ethanol fermentation in yeast
CO2, ethanol, and NAD+ are produced
Lactic acid fermentation
-occurs in animal cells (muscles)
-electrons are transferred from NADH to pyruvate to produce lactic acid
Catabolism of proteins
-Amino acids undergo delaminating to remove the amino group
-remainder of the amino acid is converted to a molecule that enters glycolysis or the Krebs cycle
Catabolism of fats
-fats are first broken down to fatty acids and glycerol
-fatty acids are converted to acetyl groups by B-oxidation
—each acetyl group is combined with coenzyme A to form acetyl-CoA
—Acetyl-CoA enters Krebs cycle
