10.2 Flashcards
A photo system consists of 2 linked components
Antenna complex and a reaction center
Antenna complex
Hundreds of accessory pigment molecules gather photons and feed the captured light energy to the reaction center
Reaction center
One or more chlorophyll A molecules passes excited electrons out of the photosystem to drive ATP/ organic molecule synthesis
Chloroplasts have 2 linked photosystems
-oxygen photosynthesis (oxygen generating)
-photophosphorylation
—production of NADPH from NADP and ATP from ADP
ATP is produced via chemiosmosis
ATP synthase uses proton gradient to provide energy for ATP synthesis
Noncyclic photophospirylation
Generates NADPH and ATP but building organic molecules requires more energy
Cyclic photophosphorylation
Allows cells to produce additional ATP by “short-circuiting” photosystek 1 to create larger proton gradient
-electrons are cycled back to b6 f complex rather than transfers to NADP+
-more protons can be pumped to the thylakoid space
