10.1 Flashcards
Photosynthesis
Energy for almost all life on earth
6CO2 + 12H2O + light ->C6H12O6 +6H2O + 6O2
Photosynthesis in plants
Occurs in chloroplasts
Light dependent reactions
-require light
-occur in the thylakoid
-capture energy from sunlight
-make ATP and reduce NADP to NADH
-produce O2 as a byproduct
Light independent reactions
-does not require light
-occur in the storma
-use ATP and NADPH to synthesize organic molecules from CO2
Pigments
Molecules that absorb photons of visible light
Photons
Particle of light that acts as discrete bundle of energy
Photoelectric effect
The energy contained in light is able to remove electron from some molecules
Chlorophyll a
-Main pigment in plants
-absorbs violet blue and red light
-only pigment that can directly convert light energy to chemical energy
Chlorophyll b
-Accessory pigment
-absorbs blue and red orange light
-adds to range of absorbed light
Carotenoids
-accessory pigment
-absorbs blue and green light
-adds to range of absorbed light
-also function as anti oxidants
