9.1- INFORMATION PROCESSING Flashcards
What is the role of your selective attention? (2)
1- Focus / filter through important information
2- Block out / ignore unimportant information
How can a coach improve selective attention? (4)
1- Train in front of crowd
2- Using intense stimuli e.g. Bright bibs and cones
3- Practice and mental rehearsal
4- break skill down
Define reaction time? (1 Mark)
The time from the stimulus occurring to the performer starting to move in response to it.
What is movement time? (1 Mark)
The time it takes from starting the movement to completing the movement.
Explain what is meant by response time. (1 Marks)
Response time is from the onset of the stimulus to the completion of the movement.
Explain what is meant by simple reaction time and give a practical example of the simple reaction time in sport (2 Marks)
A simple reaction is where one stimuli is detected and one response is given. For example the gun start in a 200m sprint and the performer sprinting.
Define choice reaction time (1 Mark)
Several stimuli are given but only one must be selected for response.
What law states that choice reaction time increases linearly as the number of alternative stimuli increases?
Hick’s Law
Identify and explain three factors that can influence a performer’s reaction time (3 Marks)
) 1. Age - reaction time deteriorates with age
- Gender - Males have a faster reaction time than females
- Previous Experience - Experience of a skill speeds up reaction time
State three ways of improving response time.
- Warm - up
- Mental rehearsal
- Practice
Selective attention is a process used by sports perfomers to help them to co-ordinate sporting info .
Explain how the process of selective attention would help a player in a game of badminton?(4)
- Selective attention is the process of filtering relevant from irrelevant information. For example the shuttle cock is filtered from the crowd in the background
- Helps player to focus on stimuli e.g. shuttlecock
- Helps the player to respond more quickly e.g. drop shot
- More time to make decisions so correct return is made in response to the positioning of the opponent e.g.
- Reduces amount of info to help working memory process information
n e.g. info on the service action may just be based on the opponents stance
