2.1- SKILL Flashcards
The skill of a free throw in basketball is an example of a skill that can be classified as which of the following. Justify your answer for each classification
a) open, externally paced, and discrete
b) closed, self-paced and discrete
d) closed, externally paced, and continuous
(4)
b
closed because the environment does not affect how the skill is being performed ; self-paced because the performer decides the speed of the skill, discrete because the skill has a clear start and end
During a match at the Australian Open tennis championships, Maria Sharapova returned a shot by swapping her racket from her right hand to her left hand and then hitting the return. Explain why type of learning her actions represent (3)
Bilateral transfer
Racket moves across the body from right to left hand to perform a return
Left hnd mirrors the right hand so that the ball can be returned
Allows successful return that otherwise may not be possible
A high-level swimmer taking part in the world championships would display a highly skilled performance when competing. What are the characteristics of high-level skillful performance displayed in swimming (4)
Aesthetic so the body movements during turns and starts are good to watch
Consistent- the swimmer on the same side of the body after every other arm pull during front crawl
Efficient- when swimming front crawl, the toes are pointed to maximize force
Fluent- there is a glide phase when swimming breaststroke
Accurate- when approaching the turn in backstroke, the swimmer uses a target, flags placed over the pool to signal the number of arms pulls needed before starting to turn
Controlled- the swimmer controls movements during the turns
Economical- the swimmer brings the arms close to the body
The coach of a climber competing on an indoor wall is deciding whether to use massed or distributed practice to develop the climber’s skills. Discuss the use of massed and distributed practice in this situation (8)
Massed practice - no rest intervals
Distributed practice- rest intervals
Massed practice helps to provide habitual responses for tying knots which is good for saftey. Climb completed quickly . Increases fitness, depends on stage of learning , good for auntonmous stage . Does not allow time for feedback , may cause fatugue during climb and prevent success
Distrubuted practice climbing can be broken down into stages so distributed practice is appropraiate allows coach or belayer to communicate during rest intervals . Allows muscles to recover and so avoids danger of fatigue . Takes longer to competen climb
