9.1 Flashcards
Prokaryote Vs. Eukaryote
Prokaryotes have no membrane-based organelles, such as mitochondria, and sometimes have two cell membranes; they are also sometimes able to perform photosynthesis. Eukaryotes have membrane-based organelles, and the cells are capable of specializing to perform specific tasks in a larger organism.
Cytoskeleton
Long fibers that provide structural support for the cell.
Cell membrane
layer that encircles the cell and controls what get in and out
Mitochondria
breaks down molecules to form ATP
Nucleus
Stores DNA; location of transcription
Ribosomes
Small structures without membrane, translate mRNA to make proteins.
Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER)
Smooth ER produces lipids and hormones; rough ER has protein-producing ribosomes on the surface.
