3.3 Flashcards
What is the difference between an autotroph and a heterotroph?
An autotroph produces its own energy/food through processes such as photosynthesis, while a heterotroph eats other organisms for energy (can be herbivores or carnivores).
Herbivore vs. Omnivore vs. Carnivore vs. Detritivore
Herbivores only eat plants, omnivores eat plants and animals, carnivores only eat other animals, and detritivore eat discarded scraps from other animals.
Keystone species
Important species that, when removed, have a drastic and negative effect on their ecosystem.
Trophic cascade
The manner in which species directly or indirectly impact each other.
What is the difference between a food web and a trophic cascade?
A food web shows which organisms each which other organisms. A trophic cascade shows all relationships (direct and indirect) between species in a community.
