Q

What are inhibitory proteins?

A

Proteins that limit cell division to make sure there are no mistakes in DNA and that cells don’t get out of control.

Q

Why do mutations in proto-oncogenes cause cancer?

A

If a proto-oncogene mutates, it becomes an oncogene and it can cause cells to divide quickly and out of control.

Q

Why do mutations in tumor suppressor genes cause cancer?

A

Tumor suppressor genes prevent cells with genetic errors from multiplying, so if the genes mutate, then the cells with errors will divide out of control, causing cancer.
