2.1 Flashcards
Population
The amount of organisms of a certain species present in an area.
Population density
How spread out the organisms in an area are on average.
Population distribution
The pattern in which the population is dispersed.
Clumped distribution
The individuals are in groups/clusters around the area.
Uniform distribution
Individuals are spaced approximately the same distance from each other.
Random distribution
Individuals are randomly scattered throughout an area.
What can cause a population to have clumped distribution?
Resources could be better or strong social behavior could be present.
What can cause a population to have uniform distribution?
Lack of resources or territorialism.
What can cause a population to have random distribution?
Resources are evenly spaced and they ignore other individuals.
24 sunflowers are collected from 10 quadrats with a combined area of 10m squared. How many sunflowers are in the 100m field?
240 sunflowers
Karl captures and marks 40 snails from his neighborhood. A month later, he recaptures 40 more, with 9 of them being marked. How many snails are in his neighborhood?
178 snails
There are 400 red foxes living in an area of 1,000m squared. What is the population density?
0.4 foxes/1m squared
Grey wolves are pack animals and are territorial with other packs. What would be the density and distribution pattern?
The distribution would most likely be a low number, and the distribution pattern would likely be clumped.
