9. Urinary system Flashcards
how do we control acid-base balance
- blood buffers
- respiratory system
- bicarbonate ion exchange in kidneys
how do we control water balance in the body
through reabsorption of ions, urine output.
-renin produces aldosterone which acts on the tubules to increase sodium reabsorption
urines pH
slightly acidic and usually around 6- it is sterile
if theirs too much acid in the blood we secrete what?
hydrogen
why do we reabsorb amino acids?
for the kidneys
why do we reabsorb ions- bicarbonate, hydrogen ions, and potassium ions and salt ?
plays a role in water balance.
why do we reabsorb glucose
for energy, to maintain blood glucose levels.
incontinence means:
the inability to hold urine. usually a probem with the voluntary sphincer. It is usually a nervous system problem in anyone over the age of 2. Emotional or food elated sensitivities, lesions or lack of tone
urinary retention
the blockage or inability to release urine- tumor, enlarged prostate, stone..
4 processes of the kidney
- filter- RBC production
- Secrete- water balance, acid base balance
- Reabsorb- water balance, acid base balance,
- excrete- urine
