Q

Why do muscles become fatigued ?

What are the symptoms?

A

Why they fatigue:

  • impaired blood flow
  • ion imbalance within muscles
  • lactic acid build up
  • calcium release in impaired

Symptoms of fatigue:

  • muscle weakness
  • dizziness
  • headache
  • short breath
  • muscle cramps

Q

Different types of fatigue

A

1) peripheral fatigue : from short exercises

  • develops rapidly
  • caused by reduced muscle cell force
  • depletion of energy resources
  • lactic acid build up
    Sport example: sprinting

2) Central (mental) fatigue : during prolonged exercise

  • impaired function of the central nervous system
    Sport example: long distance running

Q

Focus the causes of fatigue in different types of activity or exercise

A

Fatigue is perceived different by everyone and can be affected by multiple factors such as age, level of fitness ect

On a physiological level, the development of peripheral fatigue in HIGH INTENSITY ACTIVITIES depends on the rate of:

  • depletion of energy resources ( creation phosphate and ATP)
  • increase levels of products such as lactate or hydrogen ions
When the body exercises the level of acidity increases, meaning hydrogen ions increase. (Hydrogen ions measure the acidity)

On a physiological level causes of peripheral fatigue in ENDURANCE ACTIVITIES depend on:

  • depletion of muscle and liver reserves
  • reduction is Calcuim release
  • depletion in acetylcholine
  • dehydration
  • electrolyte loss
  • overheating

Central fatigue is caused by a failure of neural transmission

Q

Discuss the recovery from fatigue after sports

A

Excess post oxygen consumption (EPOC) :

  • restoration of muscle creatine
  • removal of lactic acid
  • replenishment of myoglobin stores
  • replacement of muscle and liver glycogen stores
