8.2 Strong and Weak Acids & Bases Flashcards
Strong acid
Acid that ionizes 100% in water, making hydrogen ions
Weak acid
Acid that only partly ionizes in water, making hydrogen ions
Weak base
Only partially reacts with water to produce hydroxide ions
Base ionization constant (Kb)
The EQ constant for the ionization of a base: also called the base disassociation constant
Organic base
Organic compound that increase concentration of hydroxide ions in aqueous solution
Autoionization of water
The transfer of hydrogen ion from one water molecule to another
Ion-product constant for water (Kw)
The EQ constant for the autoionization of water
pH
negative log of concentration of hydrogen ions in an aqueous solution
pOH
Negative log of concentration of hydroxide ions in an aqueous solution
pH meter
Device that measures acidity of alkalinity of a solution electronically and displays the result as a pH value
Acid-base indicator
A substance that changes colour within a specific pH range
