8 Social Cognition and Attributions Flashcards
What are people motivated by?
the formation of a coherent view of the world
gaining control over the environment
What are the 2 loci of quality of attribution?
internal / dispositional locus (my fault)
external / situational locus
What are the dimensions of attribution?
internal/external
stable/unstable
global/specific
controllable/uncontrollable
What was Kelley’s covariation theory?
casualties are ascribed to the cause that co-varies with the behaviour
It uses 3 types of information to arrive at internal or external attribution
what are the 3 types of information Kelley’s covariation theory uses ot deduce whether attribution is internall or external?
consensus
consistency
distinctiveness (does this behaviour occur in the same way in other situations?)
What is fundamental attribution error?
tendency to attribute behaviours to a person’s internal qualities
What is actor-observer bias?
tendency to attribute other’s behaviour to internal causes, and attribute our behaviour to external causes
When might you do actor-observer bias?
when a patient is non-compliant
What are the 4 types of heuristics?
representative heuristic
availability heuristic
false consensus heuristic
anchoring heuristic
What is representative heuristic?
tendency to allocate a set of chararcteristics to a person if they match the prototype
what is availability heuristic?
tendency to jujdge the frequency or probability of an event based on how easily examples come to mind
What is false consensus heuristic?
tendency to see one’s own behaviour as typical
What is anchoring heuristic?
tendency to be biased towards the initial information
What is self-serving bias?
you take credit for successes but deny responsibility for failures+
What are the 3 main factors contributing to a behaviour in the theory of planned behaviour?
behavioural attitude
subjective norms
perceived behavioural control
