8 Proteins, Glycolipids, Sterols Flashcards
The plasma membrane contains a number of components which are integrated…
within it associate with the phospholipid bilayer
Proteins function in the phospholipid bilayer
Enable transport of molecules through channels created by the protein
Catalyse reactiosn on the cell surface
Act as anchors for carbohydrates (glycoproteins) which allow identification by other cells via receptor
Where are these proteins present
These proteins can be incoperated into the cell membrane spanning the entire membrane (transmembrane) or be associated with either surface of the phospholipid bilayer (peripheral)
Glycolipids function in the phospholipid bilayer
Receptors - which viruses and other pathogens may take advantage of
Markers for cell recognitions
Facilitates cell to cell communication by acting as receptors or anchors for proteins and other regulators of signal transduction
Where are glycolipids present
outer layer of the membrane
Sterols function in the phospholipid bilayer
Not present in most prokaryotes
Regulate membrane permability, fluidity and protein function
Helps plasma membranes adapt to different temperatures
Sterols - animal cells
Cholesterol
Sterols - plant cells
Sitosterol
Sterols - fungi
Ergosterol
