-achieving a shared goal/target helps to bind people together so they commit to each other and work hard to achieve the goal, this raises motivation.
Group formation definitions- forming, storming, norming, performing
.
Define forming
-getting to know each other, strengths/weaknesses, will people fit in
Define storming
-conflict as people stabilise roles/positions
Define norming
-cooperation. Conflicts are resolved, the team begins to settle
down and cooperate focussing on achieving goals. Standards
are accepted and the cohesion of the team develops
Define performing
-common goals, success, team support each other and understand their roles
How long
-Time taken in each stage changes- settled teams accept new players quickly while representative teams take longer to settle
-Whether this process occurs at all is down to the cohesion of the group. The England football team doesn’t seem to bond so underperforms
-The Irish rugby team always performs well above its resources as it bonds
exceptionally well
