7.7b Intellectual Property and Counterfeiting
Importance of Intellectual Property (IP)
why is iP important?
Counterfeiting undermines the global system of IPR which sustains trade relations and TNC investment
Without IP, TNCs would be reluctant to invest in R&D, because they would gain little profit from inventions that were immediately copied.
Also, countries would be reluctant to trade, because their IP would fall into the hands of others who would steal it.
7.7b Intellectual Property and Counterfeiting
Economic importance of Intellectual Property
IP has economic value. Royalty fees alone amount to $150-200 billion annually, with 80% going to the USA, Japan and western Europe

Trade Related Aspects of International Property Law Rights (TRIPS)
what does the TRIPS agreement do?
The TRIPS agreement incorporates IPR law into international trade. It means that WTO members guarantee copyright protection covering everything from performance rights and designs and trademarks, to confidential information
7.7c Political spheres of influence
Sphere of influence
what is a sphere of influence?
A sphere of influence is a physical region over which a country believes it has economic, military, cultural or political rights. Spheres of influence extend beyond the borders of the country and represent a region where the country believes it has a right to influence the policies of other countries.
