Beginning in 1347 a terrible plague known as the Black Death swept across Europe. It was also known as the Bubonic Plague or the Black Plague. It is believed to have been originated in Asia. Merchant ships carrying infected rats or fleas brought it to Europe. The disease spread quickly. By some estimates, about half the population of Europe died.

What is even worse and nearly incredible is that fathers and mothers refused to see and tend their children, as if they had not been theirs.”
