7.3: Artificial Selection Flashcards
What is artificial selection?
Humans selected desirable traits and breed the species in order to select for these traits.
How does artificial selection modify the variation in a species?
They can increase variation or decrease variation depending on what is being selected for.
Identify two examples of artificial selection due to humans. How has this modified the species?
Agriculture, elephant tusks, breeding animals for sport.
What is convergent evolution?
Similar environmental conditions select for similar traits. These are independent populations or species without a common ancestor.
Identify two examples of organisms that demonstrate convergent evolution.
Analogous structures-streamline bodies in fish and dolphins.
How do selective pressures result in similar phenotypic adaptations?
The animal will evolve to have an increased amount of organisms with the favorable trait. If the environment favors a certain trait, it will evolve naturally.
