4.3: Signal Transduction Flashcards
Identify two examples of a cell responding to its environment.
When it receives epinephrine, then signal transduction occurs so the cell is able to break down glycogen into usable glucose. Bacteria use quorum sensing to respond to changes in the environment.
What is apoptosis?
Programmed cell death
Why would a cell undergo apoptosis?
More or less of
What is a transcription factor?
It turns genes on and off by binding to nearby DNA
How does a transcription factor change gene expression?
It can turn certain sections of DNA on or off, meaning that they wont be expressed.
How can a signal change the phenotype of an organism?
A signal can change the gene expression of a protein, which means that some proteins may not be activated.
